In case you missed it, November 13th, 2018 was a night full of celebration; celebration of self-love, and the launch of Ryerson Fashion alumni, Mary Young’s, Fall/Winter 2018 lingerie collection.
For those who missed it, in the midst of finals and last-minute projects and whatever else makes up that long last stretch of a school semester, here’s a late dispatch on what you missed from Mary Young’s F/W18 launch party, hosted by FSN706, because—we don’t say this lightly—it was among the best launch parties of the semester.
Mary Young studied Fashion Communication at Ryerson and created her “lifestyle lingerie” collection as her capstone. Her collection aimed to encapsulate values of diverse body image and comfortability, designing undergarments to “allow women to celebrate their natural shape,” hence #SelfLoveClub. Mary Young’s advocacy for ethical fashion also contributes to the production of the garments in her collection, taking place in Montreal “to continue to create jobs within our country and to better the Canadian economy with every step,” as well as performing the design process in Toronto. With the creative contributions of FSN706, both the students and Mary Young, I would say accurately represented Mary Young’s values of comfortability, self-love, confidence, and with an extra touch of sexiness.
One aspect of the event that I found particularly interesting was the class’ effort to conduct and provide a video of interviews that included all of the participating-models, answering a variety of questions about their perspectives on self-love, some reflective of themselves; questions like “what does self love mean to you?”, “how do you define body positivity?”, and “comfy or sexy?” Some of the models considered the two to be one in the same, which I found interesting; saying how comfortability is a given with sexiness and vice versa. So, not only did the event provide some social fun and a celebration for the launch of a lingerie collection, but some underlying educational elements of self-reflection and self-love. What does self love mean to you?
