Carey Costa began her photographic career in Toronto’s underground music scene, and has since expanded her practice to explore the balance between commercial aesthetics and conceptual art. While music and the notion of performance remains a primary influence in her photography, she has evolved to focus on fashion and ‘beauty’ as new subject matter, and has always felt most comfortable while in control of the studio environment.
Carey currently studies at Ryerson’s School of Image Arts. Her work has appeared in galleries such as Beaux-Arts, Ryerson Artspace at the Gladstone, the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre, and as a part of Scotiabank’s Contact Photography Festival. She admires fashion and fine art photographers alike, such as Sanne Sannes, Irving Penn, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Andre Serrano, and Tim Walker. Publications such as AnOther Magazine, i-D, and Fucking Young also remain some of her favourite sources for inspiration.
